90’s Alt Rock is alive and thriving with Kavanagh’s upcoming single ‘Citizen 202’

Ellen Oakley

Dropping March 26th, ‘Citizen 202’ is dark, driven and emulates an aura cultivated in 90’s alt-rock in a refreshingly modern way. With themes of angst and alienation, Kavanagh has a slick presentation backed with distortion and scale that reaches far outside the track’s short playtime to create a microcosm of emotion strangely appropriate for today’s social climate.

The track, which clocks in at under two minutes, has an intense instrumental full of heavy dominating guitars that still maintain a melody, never forming a wall of overwhelming sound. The vocals are a brilliant choice stylistically. They allow the backing to express the harsher emotions (anger, for example) whilst the level performance further enhances the lyrics’ disappointment in modern human culture. Projecting feelings of despondency, the track is brilliantly balanced and offers more than just loud rage – it feels evolved, allowing the tone to feel fully explored.

Accompanied by a music video, not safe for arachnophobes, which utilises simple yet effective visuals combined with a satisfying colour palette to immerse the audience in the murky environment created. It amplifies the messages and topics in ‘Citizen 202’ effortlessly, which shows a clear artistic direction and knowledge of Kavanagh’s craft.

Overall, ‘Citizen 202’ is an accessible review of the chains of modern culture set to an electrifying score. Avoiding any notion of being whiney or overdramatic, the track remains grounded and relatable throughout, offering a real sense of escapism and understanding. Kavanagh has tapped into prevalent feelings of unrest and presented them with grit, leaving an impactful commentary with bite.
